Joint research by Bazaarvoice and Kiri Masters reveals consumers demand 50% discounts or proven equity before buying AI-recommended brands
Bazaarvoice partners with retail media thought leader Kiri Masters to launch new data; finds 94% of consumers do outside research before buying, 65% stick with brands they already know
AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 15, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- AI will happily recommend a brand you’ve never heard of. Consumers, it turns out, won’t automatically buy it, according to a new study released today by Bazaarvoice. The results demonstrate that AI shopping tools are not diminishing brand equity, they are putting it to an unprecedented test. While consumers are increasingly willing to let AI help them discover products, trust remains the ultimate gatekeeper, with the vast majority of shoppers refusing to buy on an algorithm's word alone. The rise of AI shopping has sparked a debate about whether brand equity still matters when AI, rather than consumers, decides which products to surface first.
"Ask an AI tool to recommend a product, and you strip away the traditional shelf cues like the logo, the eye-level packaging, and the retail positioning," said Kiri Masters, retail media thought leader and co-author of the research. "AI flips the retail model by presenting product specs first and brand second. But our research shows that far from rendering brand equity obsolete, AI makes established trust even more crucial. When stripped of visual branding, consumers lean heavily on existing brand reputation and authentic user-generated content to validate their choices."
The report highlights how consumers navigate AI suggestions:
- The 50% "dupe" threshold: Price alone won't break brand loyalty. 57% of consumers state an AI-recommended generic alternative or "dupe" must be priced at least 50% lower than their brand-name favorite before they consider switching.
- Brand familiarity drives clicks: When presented with multiple options by an AI tool, 65% of shoppers immediately click the brand they already know, compared to just 24% who click the product AI labels as its top "best match," and a mere 11% who select the cheapest option.
- Shoppers demand double verification: Trust requires multi-format validation before a purchase occurs. 76% of consumers require visual reviews (authentic customer photos or videos) before buying an unfamiliar AI recommendation, while 75% require written user reviews.
- AI recs lead to more research: An AI suggestion starts the journey rather than ending it: 94% of consumers insist on doing outside research after receiving an AI recommendation, with one-third spending over an hour verifying the product.
"An AI recommendation gets a brand on the radar, but real customer photos, ratings, and reviews are what close the deal," said Jo Callahan, VP of Brand Strategy and Experience at Bazaarvoice. "Brands don't need a total strategic overhaul for the AI age. They simply need to make sure their authentic proof points are seamlessly accessible to AI crawlers and human shoppers alike, whether that's to defend an established brand's trust or build instant credibility for a challenger. And the good news is that the reviews are doing double duty, helping to get a brand to be recommended by AI in the first place."
